Hey favorite people in the whole world!  I've got some shows this month that are my first of the post-Bush era!  Yay!  So expect my comedy to feel much freer and liberated.  So liberated, in fact, that one of my shows has puppetry involved.  Also, some are appropriately FREE in order to help us all deal with the recession!  Whoo!

First up - your favorite bad-ass men of the sketch and improv scene, The Top Shelf Chappies are performing two shows this upcoming Monday and Tuesday that are free for the recession!  I think there's going to be free popcorn at these shows too.  Monday is a sketch set, with the awesome Jurassic Park doing improv and on Tuesday, we are doing improv ourselves!

Hey everyone,

Great news. I'm producing a new show at The Magnet Theater called THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. It is going to an hour long comedy variety show with improv groups, stand up comedy, sketches, music and video pieces. Here's the catch: all the performers in the show are going to be teenagers! Finally! A night in New York for young comedy acts to work on their skills. I'm very excited about it.

That is where you all come in. I need acts! If you're interested in:

-writing a sketch with your friends and performing it in the show
-writing a comedic monologue for yourself and performing it in the show
-acting in someone else's sketch in the show
-putting together an improv group and putting it in the show
-having your awesome band play in the show
-doing a stand-up set in the show

... or ANYTHING ELSE - please don't hesitate to e-mail or facebook me or comment me with your ideas. The show is going to be Sunday, March 23rd, 6:30PM at The Magnet Theater. I'd like to have everything booked in the next two weeks, so please let me know.

I am looking forward to everyone taking this show to great heights.

Hi Western Canadians,

It's that time again that I wander back to beautiful Van City and perform some comedy for y'all at the Vancouver International Improv Festival.

I'm doing another Buckshot N Benny show with my fantastic comedy partner, Kaitlin Fontana and doing some innovative new improv with a bunch of performers from around the world as part of the festival's ensemble cast.

Also, the Saturday morning of the festival, I'm teaching a workshop in the art of Slow Comedy. If you're already an experienced improviser, this workshop will help you put some helpful NYC style improv skills into your comedy bag, so you should check it out!

Tickets for all shows can be bought at Tickets Tonight.

Here is a full lineup of what I'm doing that week:

All shows & workshops at The Waterfront Theater, 1412 Cartwright St, Granville Island, Vancouver. All cost $17.50, or you can buy a full festival pass for $40!

Buckshot N Benny: Wednesday June 6th, 7:30 PM

Live Improvised Cartoon/Vancouver Neutrino: Thursday June 7th, 10PM

The Festival Ensemble Performs: Friday & Saturday, June 8th & 9th, 7:30PM

Slow Comedy Workshop: Saturday, June 8th, 10AM, $75

Of course, looking forward to joyous reunions and hugs after the shows! I'll also be staying for a few days after the festival this year, so I'll have time to hang out with y'all. Haven't seen some of you in a while. Message to make plans please!

And Calgarians - putting the final confirmation on a show that I'm going to be doing a week after all this stuff in Calgary. I'll let you know once I know all the details!

Very excited to be coming home for a while, guys.

NYC The Fletchers have this swell idea of moving all in together in a four or five bedroom Astoria apartment. There would be five of us. Two couples and myself. We've started taking a peek at what's out there, just to see what's goin on... I found this too-good-to-be-true listing on Craig's list Saturday night:

---

$2200 / 5br - Rent stabilized, renovated, half block to NW trains, 30th Ave, near all

Five roomates or large family, five bedrooms!!!!!
Private backyard, perfect for barbequing or reading a book, nice large kitchen and Living room, separate independent entrances, Heat and hot water included, pets are welcome!
Just half block from the 30th Ave train station, N,W trains, 5-7 minutes from Midtown Manhattan, very quiet street and yet everything is around: supermarkets, coffee shops (very close to very popular and famous Athen's cafe),restaurants, shopping malls, bank, schools, houses of warship, very diverse very international location, just 2 blocks from Athens square park, and much more!
Best opportunity in town!!!
Please Call Vicky for a showing
Won't last!!!
******WE HAVE LARGE SELECTION OF APARTMENTS!************
---

Well. It was too-good-to-be-true. We went to look at it today, and that place was a fucking Freddy Krueger crack den. The only thing I think I could do in that apartment is OD in the rusty bathtub. The apartment was a basement apartment, which the realtor assured us was "perfectly legal!" (yeah, because we weren't even considering the possibility of it being illegal until he said that) and it had three separate entrances for three different rapists or robbers to take advantage of all of us.

There was a completely concrete trash-strewen "backyard", perfect for "reading a book", "barbecuing" or having your head smashed in by someone from behind when coming home late at night. The "backyard" was accessible by a creepy arched doorway entrance that was open and exposed to the street. AJ thought the whole place looked like Abu Ghirab.

We were then shown two other "Four Bedroom" apartments, that didn't really have any bedrooms because none of them had any closets. Or doors. Or proper hallways.

I hope we don't have to move from our current apartment. It's a concern.

Spider-Man 3 was pretty good, right? Definitely some leaps in logic and some total silliness (which I actually enjoyed), but some fantastic acting and action sequences. A lot of the movie reminded me of a classic creature feature from the fifties, which I enjoyed a lot.

Performance-wise, everything was solid this weekend. It amazes me how Kaitlin and I can see each other for an hour after not seeing each other in five months and get on stage and do amazing improv scenes. We both think it's totally inexplicable. It might be one of those chemistry things. I almost don't want to write about it here because I'm worried that I'll jinx it somehow.

Her friend Katie took these great pictures of us the next day for the VIIF website. They're very cute and silly and necessary.

The first performance of The Comic Book went over very very well. It's a fun form to play in front of an audience with everyone in the cast there to support each other. It's very energetic and punchy and jokey and specific to things that I like. I made an excellent geeky Crisis on Infinite Earths joke that I'm proud of. I'm so happy the multiverse was restored in the DCU recently! Because I'm ridiculous that way.

I'm going to be working very hard the next few weeks, making as much money as possible before leaving for the improv fest in Vancouver. If you see me around, hug me, please.

So today I was asked by my friend Owen to "virtually coach" his current improv project in Calgary, The Kinkonauts. They are going to send me DVDs of shows and I'm going to take notes on them and get my notes to them through phone and e-mail.

It should be a good experiment for my coaching muscles and also for them. They'll have to try to remember the details of their improv scenes that they did a week and a half before they get notes on them (or they can just re-watch the video of their show, but that's kind of cheating now, isn't it?).

Something that I realized when I checked out the info for Owen's new group is that a whole bunch of the members of UBC improv that I performed all those fantastic shows with in college are still performing. We had our "farewell tour" show about five years and one month ago, but our love for comedy has kept us performing. I'm really proud and impressed with all of us.

You can travel across North America and see us still performing.

Andrea, Jeremy and Sean perform in Burnaby BC and around other parts of BC as Triple Play Improv.

Mark has a TV show on the OLN in Canada called Road Hockey Rumble, which he co-hosts with my film school friend Callum.

As I said before, Owen is rocking it out with The Kinkonauts, playing at a theater that is two blocks away from my parent's condo in Calgary.

Chris is on an IO Chicago Haorld Team called Barrel Full of Bullets.

and I'm... doing all the stuff that I'm doing in NYC at The Magnet etc. Including that show tomorrow night of the form that I developed myself (with a lot of help from my cast and director, who I really really appreciate). I'm nervous about that going well. I think it's important!

Also, the wonderful Kaitlin (who was only a junior member in the club at the time) is doing some coaching and learning in Vancouver, and is coming out next week so that we can do a little Buckshot N Benny performance at the Magnet Mixer. I always really really like playing with her.

I wouldn't have expected so much success out of all of us after five years, but really, we're all doing quite well with the comedy.

I also think we're all still pretty sexy, even though we're old and stuff.

First, PLEASE come to Hot Board on April 22nd at 9:30PM.  The Hot Board is a new improv form that I've created based on the sophisticated organic work of groups like Switchboard and the fun of the improv game Hot Spot.  The Magnet Theater stage will transform into the Hotboard, a place where our cast takes you on a surreal improvised journey of personal experience, songs and scenes.  This show is one of the important ones, I appreciate your support!
